Why Vibe Coders Need Code Review
If you are building with Cursor, Copilot, Claude, v0, or whatever the model of the week is, you can get a lot done without being a traditional engineer. That part is real. You can go from idea to shipped feature way faster than most teams used to. The problem is that speed creates a new kind of delusion. You start thinking "the app works" is the same thing as "the change is safe." It is not.
AI tools are good at producing code that looks finished. They are not good at carrying responsibility. They do not sit with the consequences of a sloppy migration, a missing auth check, a broken edge case, or a silent billing bug. You do. Your users do. Your bank account does.
That is why code review still matters, especially for non-technical founders. Maybe even more for them.
When you are vibe coding, you are usually working from output, not first principles. You prompt for a feature, skim the result, test the happy path, and move on. That workflow is great for momentum. It is terrible for catching hidden risk. Most bad merges do not fail in the obvious place. They fail in the weird place. The old account. The stale session. The user on mobile Safari. The webhook that retries three minutes later. The admin action that nobody clicks until the worst possible moment.
Code review is the pause between "looks fine" and "actually checked." It forces a second pass on intent, blast radius, and side effects. Even if the reviewer is also using AI, the act of reviewing changes the standard. You go from "can this compile?" to "should this ship?" Those are completely different questions.
There is also a practical trust issue. If you work with contractors, offshore teams, or even just a rotating set of AI-generated diffs, you need a clean record of who approved what. Without that, every bad deploy becomes a group shrug. Nobody remembers who merged the risky thing. Nobody can explain why it seemed okay at the time. Everyone gets less confident, not more.
This gets worse as the product starts making real money. Early on, a broken feature is annoying. Later, it is refunds, churn, support tickets, and a founder doom-scrolling logs at 1:13 a.m. Most teams do not need more code. They need better checkpoints.
Good review for vibe coders does not need to feel like senior-engineer hazing. You do not need to read every file like you are preparing for a compiler exam. You need the diff translated into plain English, the risky parts called out, and a clear moment where someone says yes, this goes live. That is the missing layer. Not more code generation. More merge judgment.
The easiest trap with AI is assuming acceleration removes the need for discipline. In practice it does the opposite. The faster you can produce changes, the more important it becomes to filter them. Otherwise you are just increasing the rate at which mistakes hit production.
There is a reason mature teams obsess over review checklists, approvals, and rollback plans. They learned the expensive way that "seems fine" is not an operating system. Founders using AI do not get to skip that lesson. They just encounter it sooner, usually with less margin for error.
So yes, vibe coding is real. It is useful. It is fun. It is probably how a lot of software gets built now. But if you are shipping with AI and skipping review, you are not moving faster. You are borrowing time from the future version of yourself who has to clean up the mess.
Real builders do not just ship. They decide what is safe to ship.
